Puppy Toilet Training

What Is Puppy Toilet Training?

Puppy toilet training aims to teach your pup to relieve themselves in a designated area outside of your home. This could be your back garden, yard, out on walks, or anywhere else outdoors that is safe and suitable for your puppy to ‘use the bathroom.’ It can also be called potty training, house training or toilet learning.

Why Is Puppy Toilet Training So Important?

Teaching your puppy to go to relieve themselves outside is important because:

  • Toilet training is an essential life skill for every puppy to learn.
  • It’s easier to teach a puppy to relieve themselves outside from a young age, than it is to try and house-train an adolescent or adult dog.
  • It helps to keep your home cleaner and causes less damage to your floors!

What Are Some Top Tips For Puppy Toilet Training?

Here are some top tips to successfully toilet train your puppy:

  • Use positive reinforcement to reward your puppy for relieving themselves outside.
  • Be aware of the signs that your pup needs to ‘go’ and take them outside straight away.
  • Clean up any accidents thoroughly, to remove any scents which may encourage your pup to ‘go’ there again.
  • Be patient, calm and consistent with your training. It can take some puppies longer than others to fully understand toilet training.
  • Get into a good routine of taking your pup outside straight after eating, waking up and playing to set them up for success.
  • Never punish your puppy for having accidents in the house, this is ineffective and can set back your toilet training and damage the bond you share with them.
