Dog Recall Training

What Is Dog Recall Training?

Dog recall training aims to get your dog to come back to you when you call them. It is one of the most important things and an essential life skill that your dog needs to ensure their safety.

Why Is Recall Training So Important?

Dog recall training is considered as an essential life skill for your dog because:

  • It allows you to let your dog off their lead to run and play, safe in the knowledge they will come back when you call them.
  • It can be dangerous to let your dog off lead when their recall is unreliable or non-existent.
  • If your dog escapes from your home or garden, or slips their lead out on a walk, you can’t get them to come back to you without a reliable recall.
  • It helps to keep your dog safe by making sure they don’t run across roads, run up to unknown dogs or people, or get themselves lost when they are out of the house.

How Do I Start Dog Recall Training?

Teaching your puppy or dog a reliable recall can be challenging, especially if you have never had to do this before. Some dogs respond to recall training faster than others, but it’s vital that your dog does learn this skill. Every time we ask our dogs to come back to us when we call them, we are essentially asking them to stop what they are doing and prioritise returning to us over everything else, which is often much more exciting than we are!

Our Puppy Training Classes and Dog Training And Socialisation Classes cover the basics of recall training, but if you feel like you would benefit more from individual help with this, take a look at our 1-2-1 Training Sessions.
